A 3 o’clock game for you now where Watford welcome Chelsea to Vicarage Road in what is billed as an Italian showdown between former Inter manager Walter Mazzarri and former Juventus manager Antonio Conte.
Watford managed to secure a 1-1 draw with Southampton at St.Mary’s last time out and they did look impressive at times, especially defensively. They frustrated Southampton for a while until substitute Nathan Redmond broke the deadlock just before the hour mark; it certainly was a dogged performance from the Hornets. Etienne Capoue is going to be a very important player for Mazzarri this season, he scored last week but that’s not what he is going to be in the team to do, it’s going to be as a midfield anchor man and with Mazzarri being a typical Italian manager, he will really want to utilise him.
Chelsea managed to snatch a home win against London rivals West Ham at Stamford Bridge with an 89th minute winner from everybody’s favourite pantomime villain Diego Costa. Costa should’ve been sent off for a second bookable offence when he fouled keeper Adrian who had dawdled on the ball but referee Anthony Taylor let him off with a warning and it proved to be a decision that decided the game. Chelsea are going to be up there this season and will need to see off teams like Watford if they want to actually challenge for the title again. Can Conte make Chelsea a force again?
Conte and Mazzarri famously fell out when in charge of Juve and Napoli when Mazzarri was accused of suggesting that Conte had copied Napoli’s formation. Mazzarri said he had been misunderstood but there has been tension ever since…I can’t wait for this touchline battle.
Outright Winner – Chelsea
The great thing for Antonio Conte is that he arrived at Chelsea when they already had an excellent squad of players that had won the league 2 years ago. Therefore the fact that only 2 additions have been made to the squad with N’Golo Kante and Michy Batshuayi coming in and not much else, isn’t of massive concern to Chelsea fans because they know that they already have lots of quality. Watford have made some good signings but they don’t have any world class players and that will show on Saturday. Also Heurelho Gomes loves a high profile mistake so you can never been certain with him between the sticks.
Both Teams to Score – No
James Collins managed to score for West Ham last Monday but I don’t think Watford will be able to penetrate this Chelsea defence with the vastly experienced John Terry at the heart of it. Chelsea should score but I don’t think Watford have the quality, especially with Troy Deeney and Ighalo amongst the goals for them.
Correct Score – Watford 0-2 Chelsea
I think Conte will be the Italian Stallion after this match with Mazzarri left licking his wounds. Watford are going to be an interesting watch this season as I don’t think anybody can predict whether they will do amazingly well or terrible.
First Goal Scorer – Diego Costa
Diego Costa is a 20 goal a season striker…providing he can stay on the pitch. Its strange because his crazy nature is probably what makes him so good, he has hunger and desire that nobody else can match however, he is a ticking time bomb and Chelsea fans must have their hearts in their mouths at times. He needs to learn to curb it or he could cost Chelsea games this season. When he is in front of goal though he is absolutely lethal and I think he will score first here.
