The season is heading into the final straight in the world of football. The end is in sight for the majority of clubs in the Sky Bet League One, however Walsall don’t fall into that category.
The Saddlers come in to Tuesday’s game in hand against Shrewsbury knowing that only a win is good enough to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive. Six points is the gap between Walsall and promotion counterparts Burton who currently hold the second automatic position, however Walsall can quash that margin if they can find a way to victory.
Walsall fans will be fairly relieved at the thought of playing Shrewsbury at this critical time, as the Shrews have only picked up one point in Walsall from a possible twenty-one since 2006. In this season’s first meeting, similar matters occurred once more with the Saddlers overpowering their opponents in December, with Walsall claiming the victory 3-1.
Walsall have got the key to victory against the Shrews in League One, and with automatic promotion still in sight, the odds on a Walsall victory at 1.65 is very attractive and nonetheless a well calculated prediction of events.
The Shrews have had defensive problems all season, with seventy goals conceded only the bottom two in the division have conceded more. They have conceded at least two goals in three straight away matches, and to make matters worse they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in seven consecutive trips to Walsall.
Eventually there comes a point where it really is do or die, and for Walsall that point is now. The chance to snatch the euphoria of automatic promotion and avoid the anguish of the play-offs, but failure to win here and the chance goes away.
