Manchester City host PSG tonight in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final in a match that is likely to be as unpredictable as the first leg. The furthest either side has got in the Champions League is this stage, so whichever club qualifies will be in their first ever Champions League semi-final – making the prospect of a win even more important.
The first leg was completely unpredictable and full of goals.
The real winners of the match in Paris were Manchester City. Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw his poor penalty saved by Joe Hart and City scored two away goals which will play a very significant role in the tie. After the penalty miss, Manchester City took the lead in the first half thanks to the return of their record-breaking signing Kevin de Bruyne. The lead only lasted three minutes as an embarrassing error from Fernando led to a ridiculous goal for PSG ‘scored’ by Ibrahimovic.
PSG managed to take the lead in the second half as Adrien Rabiot scored in his second consecutive Champions League match. However, City equalised in the 72nd minute with a goal from Fernandinho who made up for his fellow Brazilian’s first half mistake.
Going into the second leg I’d expect more goals, especially with the news that Manchester City captain and central defender, Vincent Kompany, has been ruled out of the tie through injury. Otamendi and Mangala have both been poor overall this season for City and I wouldn’t expect that to change tonight. I think that Fernando and Fernandinho will be busy in their respective roles in front of the defence. Both teams to score may only be 1/2 but it looks like a safe bet for tonight’s match.
PSG will be looking to nullify Manchester City’s away goals and they know they can do this as they scored two in their last match in England against Chelsea last month in the first knockout round. With the attacking quality of Ibrahimovic, Cavani and Di Maria, PSG are likely to score goals tonight. PSG to score over 1.5 goals is 10/11 and I’d say to score over 2.5 goals looks great value at 3/1.
Despite the midfield missing the power of Blaise Matuidi due to suspension, Marco Verratti returns for the Parisians and he will play an important role as he has the quality to control the match from the midfield. David Luiz is missing for PSG through suspension when he was booked after just 12 seconds in the first leg. However, this will probably be a blessing in disguise for the French side as the talented Brazilian youngster, Marquinhos, will be given a start.
Manchester City: Hart; Sagna, Otamendi, Mangala, Clichy; Fernando, Fernandinho; De Bruyne, Toure, Silva; Aguero
PSG: Trapp; Aurier, Marquinhos, Silva, Maxwell; Motta, Verratti, Rabiot; Di Maria, Ibrahimovic, Cavani
I think that PSG will be too strong for Manchester City who look unorganised and weak in defence. Despite conceding two goals in the home leg, PSG look like a much better side this season than Man City and I think they could even reach the Champions League final this season.
PSG are outsiders to qualify at 21/20 and City are favourites at 7/10 thanks to their away goal advantage. I’d still back PSG and think PSG win with both teams to score looks like good value at 3/1
I’ve also gone for Edinson Cavani to score last at 13/2 as I could see a repeat of PSG’s first leg against Chelsea with the Uruguayan breaking Manchester City fans’ hearts.
