Despite their disappointing performance in the beginning of the 2016/17 Serie A and the loss to Chievo in the opening game (2-0), Inter Milan have the quality and roster to turn things around and become title contenders.
On Sunday night, the “Nerazzurri” failed to score a goal, despite having the ball possession, and, consequently, Valter Birsa scored twice to give Chievo the victory.
With the club failing not only to win the Scudetto last year, but also finish within the top-3 (they will play in the Europa League), their target now is to return to the winning track and dethrone Juventus.
The question is, though, whether they are able to do that.
During the current transfer period, the “Nerazzurri” acquired Cristian Ansaldi and Caner Erkin, however their best signings were Ever Banega and Antonio Candreva, who are expected to make the difference in the midfield and offensive line, respectively.
On the other hand, the team faced some issues in the past few weeks, as striker Mauro Icardi came close to join Napoli, but, and according to the Italian newspaper “Gazzetta dello Sport”, he reached an agreement to sign a new contract and remain a member of the squad.
Moreover, coach Roberto Mancini parted ways with the team and former Ajax boss, Frank De Boer, was hired as his replacement. Is the Dutchman, though, the ideal manager for the “Nerazzurri’s” bench?
“I hope to get us on the right track as soon as possible,” he told reporters at his unveiling. “But obviously it’s not going to be easy.
We speak the same language – myself, the president and the management team,” he added. “We want to win.”
De Boer’s aim is to stabilise the club’s performance at high levels and help all the players do their best, as his starting squad is certainly strong.
More specifically, Samir Handanovic will be the goalkeeper and is expected to be one of the squad’s leaders, while the duo of Joao Miranda and Jeison Murillo will offer decent solutions defensively, along with wing backs (and newcomers) Ansaldi and Erkin.
In the midfield line, the presence of Geoffrey Kondogbia, Felipe Melo, Gary Medel and Marcelo Brozovic will be a key factor in the side’s effort to retain the stability between the offensive and defensive line as well as take control of the game.
At the same time, Banega, probably Inter’s best acquisition so far, will have a central role on De Boer’s tactics, while forwards Ivan Perisic, Cadreva and Icardi will try to be as effective as possible offensively.
The aforementioned players should be at their very best in every game, if Inter want to remain a title contender.
It’s also worth mentioning that the club is close to sign Sporting’s midfielder and European champion, Joao Mario, who will be a great acquisition that will strengthen the roster and offer high quality on both ends of the pitch.
That said, the club seems to have created a decent and talented team, covering the gaps they had last year, so it’s up to them to show they are ready to fight against defending champions Juventus for the Scudetto.
Concurrently, De Boer should endure the pressure for immediate success and work directly with talented director of sport, Piero Ausilio, in order to help the team work effectively both on and off the pitch.
Otherwise, and if the club continues to make disappointing performances, like the one against Chievo, it will again be difficult for Inter Milan to return to the top, both in Italy and Europe.
